The Innovation in labs worldwide fuels formulators' creativity and makes its way into the marketing messages of the buzziest brands. Ingredients (alongside an original idea) are the very foundation of the products created by beauty and wellness brands. Manufacturers creating these ingredients give brands the building blocks to create tomorrow's cult products.

The science fueling ingredient development transcends the traditional beauty industry mindset and challenges the limits of what's possible. These companies are revolutionizing the industry from the ground up, having a deep impact on how finished products show up.

Discover the finalists in 2026 BeautyMatter Awards Breakthrough Technology (ingredient) category.

Rubinity: The Barcelona-based biotech company ALGAKTIV derived the ingredient from Haematococcus pluvialis, a microalga that shifts from green to deep red under environmental stress by accumulating astaxanthin as a protective shield. ALGAKTIV has translated this natural stress response into an active ingredient for the next generation of lip care and hybrid lip color. Rubinity’s processing technology increases the proportion of cis-astaxanthin, a form associated with improved dispersion in oils and waxes and stronger biological relevance for cosmetic applications, making it particularly suitable for hot-process and anhydrous lip formats. The innovation provides not only antioxidant protection but also supports multiple drivers of visible benefits like hydration, plumping, extracellular matrix support, barrier reinforcement, microcirculation, natural redness, and lipstick performance.

Exovive Lift: Developed by DSM-Firmenich, the ingredient is sustainably crafted from a unique trio of organic fruits (Alpine apple, Mediterranean tangerine, and Sicilian papaya) and isolates the plants’ quintessence in a highly concentrated powder. Its exceptional potency means an ultra‑low use level of just 0.026%, delivering around one billion vesicles in a single 1 mL application. By harnessing the power of plant-derived exosomes, it delivers in vivo results that dramatically increase formulation efficiency without compromising efficacy.

Parsol Shield (bemotrizinol): DSM-Firmenich pioneered the ingredient's introduction to the US over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen market, marking the first new UV filter in more than 25 years. The innovation lies not only in its performance but also in addressing long-standing formulation challenges. PARSOL Shield represents a breakthrough in US sunscreen technology, delivering high-performance, broad-spectrum UV protection with formulation flexibility. It stabilizes avobenzone without octocrylene, enabling cleaner formulations aligned with evolving regulatory and consumer expectations. Even at low concentrations, it provides efficient UVB and UVA protection, while offering superior photostability and compatibility with organic and mineral UV filters.

SenoCellTec: Developed by Mibelle Biochemistry, this advanced skin rejuvenation extract combines senolytics with skin stem cell activation to target aging at the cellular level. In vitro, SenoCellTec reduced senescent fibroblasts from 28.1% to 10.1%, matching the senolytic benchmark Navitoclax. Apple stem cell extract boosted dermal progenitor sphere formation by 43%, while grape stem cell extract increased keratinocyte colony-forming efficiency by up to 77.5%, indicating its regenerative potential. Ex vivo, SenoCellTec increased young collagen (type III) by 19% and restored dermal thickness. It also modulated keratinocyte gene expression, promoting differentiation, barrier reinforcement, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory response. Clinically, it improved texture, hydration, firmness, density, and elasticity, while reducing wrinkles—even under gravity-induced stress.

TPZ-01: A patented precision enzyme ingredient developed by Hypothesis, it uses a proprietary metagenomics platform that mines vast, previously unexplored microbial diversity found in nature. The ingredient is built on protein scaffolds that evolved naturally to control bacterial populations, giving it an inherent precision that no synthetic molecule could replicate. It selectively targets and eliminates Staphylococcus aureus , the bacteria now known to play a central role in driving eczema severity, while leaving beneficial bacteria untouched. In laboratory testing, TPZ-01 eliminates 99.99% of Staphylococcus aureus within five minutes without affecting beneficial bacteria.
